There are many ways to enjoy
photographs: framed on the wall, in books, on web sites. One of the
most pleasing and intimate ways is to sit in a comfortable
chair with a good light and closely examine original prints while holding
them. Holding a print draws the viewer into the image in a way that is
very different than other viewing methods, and the tactile feel of the paper
is an important part of the experience. Boxed portfolio sets have long been a tradition in black and white fine art photography. A well-designed portfolio takes the viewer on a brief visual journey. Photos are chosen which work well together and are placed in a particular order, similar to hanging prints in a gallery. The size of the prints is also important. Too large and one wants to hold it at arm's length, destroying any sense of intimacy. Too small and it enters the realm of miniatures.
