Big Bend, 1987

Big Bend is the area along the west coast of  Florida where it makes the curve into the panhandle.  It is a sparsely populated territory of vast tidal marshes and creeks, river deltas and small towns.  This remarkable and unique ecosystem is a transition zone between the Gulf of Mexico and the land.

In the winter of 1987 I made a four day photo expedition along the coast, traveling north from Old Town as far as the lighthouse at San Marcos National Wildlife Refuge, and then inland through Perry up to Shady Grove, before heading home.  I found the immense, stark solitude to be nourishing to the soul, and also conducive to complete concentration on the photography.  It remains one of my most intense photographic experiences and resulted in some of my favorite images.
